Annual Conference 2025—Call for Papers

Dear colleagues,

We are thrilled to announce that the call for paper proposals is now open for the Annual Conference of the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS). The deadline to submit your paper is Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 23:59 EST. The conference will take place on November 19, 2025, at George Washington University in Washington, DC, with a virtual meeting the week prior, November 14–15, 2025 (CESS2025online).

IMPORTANT

This year, CESS is running a two-stage call, where alongside the call for pre-organized (or closed) panels and other formats, colleagues may propose open panels. The panel call is now closed, and the open panels accepted by the Program Committee are listed on our website.

At the call for papers stage, those wishing to propose individual papers are encouraged to first review the open panels to see whether their work could align with one. Such papers can be submitted directly via the website to the relevant open panel, and the panel convenors will decide which to accept. If your work does not seem to fit there, you may still propose an individual paper here.

Proposal outcomes will be communicated on July 25, 2025.

Host: George Washington University, Washington, DC.

Geographic Focus: Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Xinjiang, Tibet, Mongolia, Siberia, Inner Asia, the Black Sea region, the Volga region, and East and Central Europe.

Types of Panels: Traditional panels, roundtables, scholarship-in-progress, and events-in-progress.

Travel Grants: Limited grants available.
