15th Congress of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore Helsinki, Finland 21-24 June 2021

SIEF2021 News

Getting ready

Dear SIEF2021 delegate
The congress is soon upon us, so here's a quick introduction to the programme and the platform!

Programme

The congress programme will open with a day of Working Group meetings on Saturday, 19 June, followed by the Sunday event of celebrating 100 years of Finnish Ethnology and then the congress opening, keynote and reception

Most of the academic programme takes place from 21-24 June, with a keynote each day, two panel sessions and plenty of additional events, receptions and meetings! Besides traditional panels there are plenty of sessions playing with other formats - so do check out which workshops, roundtables or poster sessions grip your fancy.

You can customise the programme according to your interests: login from the link above the timetable, star sessions and create your individual schedule.

All times in our future communications and on the website are given in the time in Helsinki - East European Summer Time (EEST).

PLATFORM and PRESENTATION CHOICES

The conference takes place within an online platform called Whova which interacts with Zoom. Depending on your role in the conference, please check out in advance the following guides created by Whova on how to make the most out of your conference experience:

Attendee User Guide

Speaker Guide

If unfamiliar with Zoom meetings, please look through the Zoom video tutorials, particularly those labelled: Zoom Meetings and webinars and Audio, video & sharing.

Do not worry: Zoom is very easy to use (and most academics have already used it excessively for over a year!). There will also be a volunteer in each panel to assist the convenors and presenters.

Presentations - you don't have to pre-record, but you can!

As we are using Zoom, and Zoom allows people to share screen, there is no need to upload or send your PowerPoint slides anywhere beforehand. There is also NO requirement to pre-record your presentation as a video. Most people will be presenting ‘live’ on Zoom.

However, if you are concerned that your internet connection will not allow you to present live, or your time zone makes live participation complicated, then you can pre-record a video presentation, upload it to your own YouTube channel or Vimeo account and send the link to this video to your convenor in advance, so they can share their screen and play your video to the virtual room. You can also simply add the link to Cocoa, our conference interface. For that you will need to log in from the conference website, (link in in the top left corner), click the Logged in drop-down and select conference, click your paper title, and paste the link to your video in the field "Url of Livestream/recording", and save the change!

For those pre-recording a presentation, you may find our recording guide helpful (ignore the Shindig content further up the page 😁). The simplest method is to record yourself within a solo Zoom meeting.

ACCESSING THE PLATFORM

We will send your individualised Whova invitation email and more detailed instructions about how to log in on 15 June.

Having received that email you will be able to log in to Whova to check out the event, the interface and familiarise yourself with everything in advance of the conference. You can also join us at one of our drop-in days to test out your computer gear and presentation slides. There will be 2 drop-in days:

17 June 09:00-17:00 EEST
18 June 12:00-20:00 EEST

A member of our team will be online during these days to help you test out your gear/slides and answer any questions you may have. We highly advise you to take this opportunity to test things out ahead of the live conference. You may only need to attend for 5-10 mins but it will be well worth it.

All times are given as UTC+03:00/EEST timezone.

Outstanding fees

Lastly, if your conference fees are still owing, please visit our payment page and settle your invoice ASAP. Many thanks!

If you have any questions, please email and we will try to help!

Yours
Triinu
