Annual Conference (CESS 2024)

We are delighted to announce that the call for proposals for CESS 2024 is now open. CESS Annual Conference for 2024 is scheduled to take place in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan, from June 6 to June 9, 2024, hosted by the esteemed Turan University, one of Kazakhstan’s leading educational institutions.
The deadline to submit proposals was March 9, 2024.

For CESS 2024, we invite submissions relating to all aspects of humanities and social science scholarship across the region. The geographic domain of Central Eurasia encompasses Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Xinjiang, Tibet, Mongolia, Siberia, Inner Asia, the Black Sea region, the Volga region, and East and Central Europe. Practitioners and scholars in all fields are encouraged to participate.

CESS conferences have been held at universities around North America and Central Eurasia since 2000. They offer up to 70 panels and attract around 300 participants from all over the world.

The conference, a staple event since 2000, has been a platform for scholars from North America and Central Eurasia to converge and share their insights. CESS President Ablet Kamalov (Turan University) and CESS Past President Jeff Sahadeo (Carleton University) are playing a key part in the organization of the conferences this year. CESS 2024 promises a broad reach, inviting scholars to contribute across all humanities and social science disciplines concerning Central Eurasia.

The conference will be in-person only.

Panels
We highly encourage all participants to form their own panels; however, individual proposals are also welcome.

In addition to “traditional” (chair, 3-4 presenters, discussant) panels and roundtables, we encourage other proposals, including:

  • Scholarship-in-Progress panels or ones on recently published works of scholarship (including author-critic forums)
  • Events-in-Progress panels on the evolving political, social, economic, and cultural situation in the region

Find out more information about the requirements of each proposal type here:

The deadline for proposal submissions was March 9, 2024. (11.59 pm Eastern Standard Time).

We will notify applicants of the outcomes of their submission by April 1, 2024.
